Sandra Douglass; The NFL's First Black Woman Team President (Unpublished)

The National Football League is continuing its recent trend of "firsts ever".

The Las Vegas Raiders have just hired Sandra Douglass Morgan to be the team's president. The former Nevada Gaming Control Board chairwoman will be the NFL's first Black woman team president in its 102-year history.

Sandra Douglass Morgan in her previous positions granted her many "firsts".

She was the first Black person to serve on the Control Board in Nevada. She was also first Black city attorney in the state of Nevada. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sandra Douglass Morgan didn't officially meet Las Vegas Raiders' owner Mark Davis until September 2021. The role for team president was opened up last May, after interim team president Dan Ventrelle was fired for allegedly acting as a whistleblower for the Raiders' various poor working conditions.

Ventrelle provided the NFL league offices several complaints from employees in regard to Mark Davis' misconduct as an owner. Mark Davis at the time was allegedly dismissive of the complaints, and Ventrelle was forced to take it to higher powers. The complaints were amplified, after former Raiders coach Jon Gruden resigned in October 2021 after his racist, misogynistic and homophobic email comments between 2011 and 2017 were made public.

Mind you, Mark Davis is also responsible for publishing and defending one of the worst tweets of all time.

It's hard not to see the concerns.

In the present, it seems like Mark Davis and the Raiders are looking to improve and correct past mistakes. Sandra Douglass Morgan doesn't want the opportunity to cover up the team's fractured past.

In a letter sent to employees she addressed the matters at hand.

Let me be clear—I am not here to avoid or sidestep problems or concerns that need to be addressed. I've given long and thoughtful consideration to joining you, and I've done so because I believe in the promise of the Raiders.

Most importantly, I believe in your core values of integrity, community, and commitment to excellence. I will expect you to embody those and to hold me accountable to doing the same.

Hopefully the decision to make Sandra Douglass Morgan team president comes from a real concern for the better good and not as window dressing. Only time will tell.
