After a year of dealing with an injury Serena Williams is returning to Grand Slam tennis to chase history.
On Tuesday, Serena Williams announced within an Instagram post that she will be heading to Wimbledon to compete in the Eastbourne doubles and the Wimbledon singles draws.
Soon thereafter the All England Club confirmed that Serena's return is official.
Serena Williams hasn't played a single official set of tennis since suffering a right leg injury against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in 2021.
This happened during the opening round of the very same Grand Slam location that she is returning to. It was second mid-match retirement at any Grand Slam tournament of her career and her first since 1998. Since her injury the Women's Tennis Association Tour, has seen many new challengers take the top spots. Currently Williams is ranked outside the top 1000 players in the world, but that's only because she hasn't played and missed out on vital tournaments. The 40-year-old legend is still trying to chase the illustrious "most major singles titles" accolade in tennis history. She's one away from tying Margaret Court at 24 titles. Serena even believes she "should've had 30 or 32" titles by now.
Serena's best result in the past couple of years came last year after losing in the Australian Open semi-finals against Naomi Osaka. At recent Wimbledon tournaments, she was the runner-up in 2018 and 2019. Despite her recent injuries, it's clear that the greatest tennis of all time still has a lot left in the tank.
59th ranked WTA player Andrea Petkovic even understands the significance of Serena Williams' return.
Serena's return is good for her and bad for us.
I think it's great for the women's tour to have her back. Some of my American friends said Serena has low-keyed retired, but I refused to believe that. I'm looking forward to seeing her at tournaments again.
I hope I do not play against her in the first round. I think Serena will be super-fit for Wimbledon; otherwise, she would not try. She must have been working very hard in the last couple of weeks.
Even if Serena doesn't make a long run at the English events, it will give her a huge boost to prepare for the U.S. Open later in the summer.
