Fortunately for Us, Maxwell Is Back (Unpublished)

 Out of the mist of the dark evening sky, Maxwell appeared, singing a song to get you in the mood.

"OFF" is the latest offering from the neo-soul legend. It is the first single off his upcoming album, blacksummers'NIGHT. The upcoming album will be last entry in the trilogy of the blacksummers'night series. The song features production from his alter-ego "MUSZE", and long time collaborator Hod David.

By the way, you should look at Hod David's musical credits, they are astonishing.

"OFF" presents Maxwell's sultry tenor voicings over slow moving synthesizers and bass plucks. Of course, it is difficult to not get movin' and groovin' once the hi-hats start to percolate and the song picks up.

blacksummers'NIGHT, set to release in Spring of 2022, will be Maxwell's the last album under Columbia Records. He signed that deal back in the Mid-1990s. Maxwell just got out that deal to start new relationship with BMG. BMG also just acquired the rights to Tina Turner's music after she declared that she wanted to get rid of everything. R&B acts might want to head to BMG, just saying...

Anyways, Maxwell recently spoke to Elias Leight of Rolling Stone about the joy of finally being able to own his masters.

Maxwell said,

“There’s so much happening, the end of the trilogy; the opening of a new chapter. When I started out I didn’t know the power dynamics, the ins and outs of the record industry. I was just happy to be on the rise. Later I would hear from Prince, like, ‘You should own your masters and understand the business.’ I was signed back in 1994. Things are different now, and gatekeepers have changed.”

If Prince is giving you the co-sign and advice to get something done. I would take it.

Maxwell even announced tour dates for Spring 2022. He will be on tour with his R&B contemporaries, Anthony Hamilton and Joe. You can check out the tour dates here.
